Thank you to the Port of Whitman County and the US Army Corps of Engineers for the tour of Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River last Saturday morning. It was great to see firsthand the critical importance of the dams for agricultural transport and meeting our energy needs, and to see the phenomenal engineering and research that goes into supporting fish recovery.
Congress authorized construction of the dams for the primary purpose of transportation. Now they are also vital for our region’s energy needs.
One point that is sometimes not well understood is how the dams provide reliable baseload power during times of high demand, serving as giant clean energy batteries. My wife Eleanor wrote about this in a Spokesman op-ed in April, which you can read here.
Wind tends not to blow when it’s very cold or very hot.
When I’m in Congress, the dams are staying right where they are.
